Promotion from one geup to the next can proceed rapidly in some schools, since schools often allow geup promotions every two, three, or four months. Students of geup rank learn the most basic techniques first, and then move on to more advanced techniques as they approach first dan. Many of the older and more traditional schools often take longer to allow students to test for higher ranks than newer, more contemporary schools, as they may not have the required testing intervals. High Block

( 올려막기 olgul makgi )

Difficulty Level:  Beginner      Technique: Blocks ( 막기 makgi )

A high block deflects a downward strike such as a hammer fist, a stick or a face punch from a taller opponent. The blocking arm starts low with the hand in a relaxed fist across the abdomen(over the belt) with the palm facing upward. The other hand is placed on the side of the waist which begins by placing the arms across the chest at shoulder level and the palm facing towards the body. With the elbow facing up in the final position, the wrist of blocking hand is one fist away from the forehead(center).
